Brisbane, Australia – Fourth-seeded Serena Williams battled round match against Serbian Bojana 2, 6-4 victory at the $220,000 Brisbane opening event.
Williams rolled her ankle serving for the match, but recovered to finish off the relatively easy victory.
Earlier, Iveta Benesova took down local favorite and top-seeded Samantha Stosur, 6-4, 6-2. Despite winning all four previous matches against Benesova, Stosur struggled early and never recovered.
In other second round action, sixth-seeded Serb Jelena Jankovic cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Russian Nina Bratchikova.
Jankovic won 60 percent of her first-serve points (21-of-35) and 5-of-7 break points while only double faulting three times.
In the opening match of the day, Estonia's Kaia Kanepi upset seventh-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 6-0, 6-3.
Kanepi got 72 percent of her first serves in and won 96 percent of first- serve points, while double faulting only once.
Pavlyuchenkova saved only 6-of-10 break points and double faulted seven times on her way out of the tournament.
The winner of this tournament will collect $110,000.
