Chow named Hawaii's head coach

Honolulu, HI – University of Utah offensive coordinator Norm Chow has been named Hawaii's next head football coach.

Chow, a Hawaii native, succeeds Greg McMackin, who announced his retirement two weeks ago after four seasons as the Warriors' head coach. Chow is the program's 22nd head coach, and will become the first Asian-American coach of a major football program.

"I am happy and proud to welcome Norm Chow as our new football coach," Hawaii athletics director Jim Donovan said. "I'd like to thank the search committee for their work the last two weeks. Obviously Norm is one of the best offensive minds in the country and we are thrilled that he's able to come home and lead our football program. This is special not only for the university, but for him. His wide-open offense and name recognition will only help us in recruiting the top talent to our university and football program."

Chow has 39 years of coaching experience under his belt and is a three-time national Assistant Coach of the Year. He has also served as offensive coordinator for three national championship teams (BYU - 1984, USC - 2003, 2004).

Chow began his coaching career as head coach at Waialua High School from 1970-72, followed by a 27-year stint at BYU. During his tenure with the Cougars, they posted a 244-91-3 record and appeared in 22 bowl games.

"I am extremely honored to receive the privilege of leading the University of Hawaii football program, it is very humbling," Chow said. "This is a program with great history, and I feel excited and energized about creating a program that will make all of the people of Hawaii feel pride for the university and our state. I am looking forward to coming home to family and friends, and I am going to do my best to contribute to the rich history of Hawaii and its progress."

Chow will remain at his current position with Utah until the Utes face Georgia Tech in the Sun Bowl on December 31.
