Osaka, Japan – Third-seeded German Angelique Kerber and seeded Czech Petra Cetkovska were among Wednesday's second-round winners at the $220,000 Japan Women's Open.
Kerber advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Belarusian Olga Govortsova, while Cetkovska beat Japan's Erika Sema 6-0, 6-3 on the hardcourts at Utsobo Tennis Center.
Up next for Kerber will be Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn, who defeated France's Mathilde Johansson 6-2, 6-4.
Cetkovska will face Zheng Jie in the quarterfinals after the China native upended fifth-seeded Australian Jarmila Gajdosova 7-5, 6-3.
In a first-round match, Vania King battled past fellow American Jill Craybas 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.
This week's champion will take home $37,000.
