SEBASTIAN, Fla. – Authorities in central Florida are warning residents about a nuisance alligator after a dog's head was found in lake, and a second dog was attacked in the same area.
Sebastian police announced the warning Monday.
The dog head was found Friday at Lake Hardee Park. Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers reports that the lake is part of a wide canal system that extends southeast into residential areas and empties at the other end into St. Sebastian River.
Police are telling resident to keep their pets under control until state wildlife officials can find the alligator. Witnesses have described the suspected nuisance alligator as being very large.
