WASHINGTON – Republican lawmakers have used a last-minute maneuver to allow the Legislature to consider overriding Gov. Beverly Purdue's vetoes of 2011 legislation.
The move came just hours after they failed to undo her veto of a bill that would have repealed the Racial Justice Act.
The House and Senate adjourned late Wednesday night, shortly after House Republicans pushed through a resolution -- despite fierce opposition from Democrats -- allowing lawmakers to begin meeting just after midnight Thursday. The move enables lawmakers to take up any veto that they couldn't override last year.
House Republicans haven't said exactly what vetoed bills they plan to take up, but appear to want to take advantage of the absence of some Democrats.
