A woman in California gave birth to a baby boy weighing 15 pounds, 2 ounces – making him one of the biggest babies to be born in the U.S. in 2014.
According to the Victorville Daily Press, 28-year-old Vanessa Cervantez gave birth to Andrew Jacob via cesarean section at Desert Valley Hospital on Thursday. When the doctors told Cervantez how much Andrew weighed, she said she didn’t believe them.
“None of the doctors have ever delivered or heard of a baby being born that big here,” Cervantez told the Victorville Daily Press. “My sister’s been doing research and she doesn’t think a baby weighing 15 pounds has ever been born in California.”
Following his birth, Andrew was immediately sent by air flight to Loma Linda Children’s Hospital. Cervantez said doctors have been monitoring the baby, because he was having trouble breathing on his own.
According to multiple media reports, the biggest baby born in the United States in 2013 was a 14-pound baby born in Utah. The Guinness Book of World Records maintains that the biggest baby ever born was to Ann Bates of Canada in 1879. The baby weighed 23 pounds, 12 ounces, but died 11 hours after birth.
