Nicole Trunfio has been photographed breastfeeding her four-month-old son, Zion, for a magazine cover.
The Australian model appears on the subscriber only cover of Elle Australia’s June issue.
“When I saw the cover of me breastfeeding, which was unplanned and just natural, I teared up and thought, ‘Wow this is such a special moment where my worlds have collided’,” Trunfio said.
“There’s the maternal side of me, who so loves being a mum, and the professional side, who’s so passionate about her career.”
A nude Zion also appears in the 12-page shoot inside the magazine while his mother wears high-end clothing from designers including Chanel, Prada and Miu Miu.
There’s also a naked shot of mother and son.
In her editor letter, Justine Cullen wrote: “This wasn’t a contrived situation: Zion needed a feed, Nicole gave it to him, and when we saw how beautiful they looked we simply moved her onto the set. It was completely natural moment that resulted in a powerful picture.”
A separate shot of Trunfio holding a sleeping Zion in her arms appears on the cover that will be in stores Monday.
“It’s a pitiful truth that women are still regularly shamed or made to feel awkward for performing the fundamental act of feeding their babies wherever and whenever they need to (of course, they’re also still shamed for not being able or choosing not to breastfeed, which I equally maddening,” Cullen said.
“Exposure to breastfeeding in the media is one of the things we can do to counter this, so I love this cover on many levels.”
Zion is Trunfio’s first child with musician partner, Gary Clarke Jr.
Trunfio said she had taken to motherhood “like a duck to water”.
“As much as I read, and as many classes as I took, I always believed my instincts would guide me — and I was right,” she said. “There was no buffer period between me before and me as a mum; as soon as he arrived, that’s all I was.”
